About BEAG
The Bicton Environmental Action Group is comprised of local members of the community who have an interest in conservation of the remnant vegetation in the Point Walter Reserve and the foreshore along Blackwall Reach Parade. The group works in conjunction with the staff of the environmental section of the Melville City Council.
Membership of the group is voluntary and there are no fees levied. The level of participation is at the member's discretion and may only involve receipt of minutes of meetings so as to be informed of the Group's activities. The Group's primary concern is the health of the remnant vegetation and the amenity of the area.
BEAG conducts a variety of activities usually between the months of April and December of each year. This enables the members to select the activity that most interests them. Each work session lasts about two hours although members give whatever time they can. For those who are interested there is a small committee which oversees the management of the group and liaises with the Council.
The group has had many achievements, including the implementation of better weed control in the Point Walter Reserve, effective control of feral bees and foxes, revegetation of part of the foreshore and bushland, installation of bird and bat boxes for native animals, removal of rubbish from the foreshore, a heightened community awareness of graffiti and vandalism in the area and the removal of a considerable volume of Sydney oyster shell from the Bicton Baths to improve the swimming amenity of the Baths.
